Welcome back to Vintage Designer! In this lesson, we're going to delve into the fascinating world of styles. Styles are like the personal preferences of an artist or designer. They allow you to save and apply consistent visual attributes to your shapes and elements, ensuring a cohesive and unified look in your artwork.
Imagine you have a specific shade of green, a stroke profile, or other design attributes that you want to use repeatedly throughout your project. Styles are here to save the day.
Let's start by creating a style for a rectangle. We have a red fill, a green stroke, and a custom stroke profile. To save this combination as a style, head over to the Effects tab, where you'll find the Styles section right at the bottom. Think of it as your style wardrobe.
You can organize your styles by creating new categories. Let's add one and name it "Trial 1." This is where you can store different sets of styles for various purposes.
With your rectangle selected, click "Add Style from Selection" within the Trial 1 category. This action creates an icon that represents your style. Now, let's say we want to apply this style to another shape. We can easily do that without having to remember the specific settings.
For instance, we create an ellipse and then choose the style we've just saved. Voila! The ellipse now inherits the exact attributes of the style. This is incredibly handy for maintaining design consistency.
Styles don't stop at colors and strokes; you can also save effects. Let's experiment with this by applying a 3D effect and an outer shadow to a cog shape. Now, when you have multiple effects applied, you can still save this entire combination as a style.
Select the cog, head to the Effects tab, choose Styles, and add the style from the selection. This style not only captures the appearance of the shape but also its applied effects.
The magic happens when you apply this style to a different shape, like a teardrop. The teardrop inherits not only the colors and stroke but also the 3D effect and the outer shadow. This demonstrates how powerful and versatile styles can be in maintaining design consistency and efficiency.
Lastly, don't forget that you can also export your styles. This is handy if you want to share your design style with others or use it across different projects.

Welcome back to the "Complete Affinity Designer for iPad Course" where we're putting the finishing touches on our neon design. To make our neon text appear three-dimensional, we'll create a glowing effect that seems to cast light on its surroundings.
First, we'll create an elliptical shape and distort it to mimic the effect of light diffusing from the neon. We'll apply a gradient fill, emphasizing a bluish-gray outer area and a bluish-white center.
Now, we'll use the Gaussian Blur effect to soften the glow and make it more realistic. Adjust the blur to achieve the desired effect and place this ellipse on top of the floor layer. Slightly reduce the opacity to create a subtle reflection.
To fine-tune the glow's intensity, we can use adjustment layers to control brightness and contrast specifically for the glow element.
Next, we'll group our layers and give them appropriate names for a well-organized project structure.
For added realism, we'll create another ellipse to simulate the light casting against the wall. Apply the Gaussian Blur effect to this ellipse as well, adjusting the settings to achieve the desired look. You can adjust its position and opacity to fine-tune the effect.
Experiment with blend modes to further enhance the interaction between layers. Blend modes dictate how layers interact with the ones below, allowing you to achieve the perfect look for your design.
Now that we've added these subtle yet impactful details, your neon design is ready to shine. To showcase your work, export it as a JPEG file, and you can name it as "Affinity Neon."
This course has taken you from creating the initial shapes to refining and polishing your design into a fully realized piece of digital art.
Stay tuned for our next lesson as we delve into the world of art creation. Get ready to explore your creative side and take your design skills to new heights.

6. **Adjusting Opacity and Blend Modes**: Fine-tune the flame by changing its opacity and experimenting with different blend modes. Overlay and Screen often work well to achieve the desired fiery effect.
7. **Creating the Wick**: Below the flame, add a new pixel layer for the wick. Use a black pen or brush to draw the wick. Ensure it's positioned appropriately beneath the flame.
8. **Smudging the Wick**: Soften the edges of the wick by using the smudge tool. You can smudge from both the inside and outside to give it a more organic appearance.
9. **Finalizing the Flame**: To complete the flame, apply a blend mode to the flame layer that best suits your design. Overlay is often a good choice, but feel free to experiment.
10. **Adjusting the Candle Placement**: Finally, make any necessary adjustments to the placement of the candle and wick to ensure they align correctly.
By following these steps, you'll create a captivating, realistic candle flame that adds a mesmerizing touch to your luminescent candle artwork. With practice, you can refine your flame design to achieve the desired level of realism and intensity.

**Creating Realistic Smoke for Your Candle Project in Affinity Designer**
Welcome back to the candle project tutorial! In the previous lessons, we added a captivating flame and wick to our candle illustration. Now, we're going to create realistic smoke to enhance the overall effect.
Here's how to create convincing smoke using Affinity Designer:
**Step 1: Set Up a New Pixel Layer for Smoke**
- Create a new pixel layer. Name it "Smoke Layer."
**Step 2: Select the Smoke Brush**
- Navigate to your brushes panel and choose the custom smoke brush you've created earlier.
**Step 3: Choose Smoke Colors**
- For a more realistic look, create two smoke layers with slightly different shades. Start with the first layer by selecting a color slightly darker than white. This will be your "base" layer for the smoke.
**Step 4: Paint the First Smoke Layer**
- Reduce the brush opacity to control the intensity.
- Paint the first layer of smoke, creating wisps of smoke around and above the candle. Allow some areas to be above and below the flame for depth.
**Step 5: Create a New Pixel Layer for the Second Smoke Layer**
- Add a new pixel layer above the first one. Name it "Smoke Layer 2."
**Step 6: Choose a Lighter Smoke Color**
- On this new layer, select a color that's slightly lighter than the previous one. This will be your "highlight" layer for the smoke.
**Step 7: Paint the Second Smoke Layer**
- Use the same smoke brush and paint additional smoke on the second layer. Overlap some of it with the first layer to create depth and variation.
**Step 8: Blend Modes for Smoke**
- Experiment with blend modes for both smoke layers. Blend modes can have surprising effects on your smoke, so try different ones to see what looks best.
**Step 9: Smudge for Realism**
- Use the smudge brush tool to further shape and blend the smoke. Start with the top layer and then work on the bottom layer. Smudge in the direction of the smoke's flow to create a realistic effect.
**Step 10: Finalize the Smoke**
- For added realism, use the airbrush tool with a lower strength and flow setting to blend and soften the smoke edges. This will give it a more organic and natural appearance.
**Step 11: Leave Space for Highlights**
- When adding smoke around the flame, leave some space to incorporate white highlights in the next phase.
This method of creating two smoke layers with different colors and blending modes adds depth and realism to your smoke effect. By varying the opacity, blending modes, and smudging, you can achieve a convincing, natural-looking smoke effect.
In the next phase of the tutorial, you'll learn how to add reflected light and highlights to complete your candle project. Stay tuned for the final step!

**Adding Realistic Lighting to Your Candle Illustration in Affinity Designer**
Welcome to part four of the candle project tutorial. In this step, we'll explore how to add realistic lighting effects to your candle, simulating the way light interacts with the surroundings. We'll use the Pixel Persona and the airbrush tool for this purpose.
Here's how you can achieve this effect:
**Step 1: Create a New Pixel Layer**
- Go to the background layer where your candle is located and add a new pixel layer above it. This layer will be used to apply the lighting effect.
**Step 2: Use the Airbrush Tool**
- Select the airbrush tool from the toolbar. This tool will be your primary tool for creating the lighting effect.
**Step 3: Gradual Color Transition**
- Choose a very dark color, almost black, for your airbrush.
- Start by applying the dark color around the edges of the candle, especially where the light would be less intense.
- Gradually increase the opacity as you move closer to the area where the light source is.
**Step 4: Blend Opacity**
- To create a realistic effect, gradually reduce the opacity of your brush as you move further away from the light source. This will make the lighting effect appear softer and more natural.
**Step 5: Experiment with Colors**
- Change the color of your airbrush to represent the color of the light hitting the candle. For example, use a light orange color to simulate warm candlelight.
**Step 6: Apply Lighting on the Candle**
- Carefully apply the light effect to the parts of the candle that would be directly illuminated by the flame. Keep the opacity low to maintain subtlety.
**Step 7: Refine the Effect**
- Adjust the opacity and color as needed to create a convincing lighting effect. You can intensify the effect in certain areas and leave others with a gentle glow.
**Step 8: Blend Modes**
- Experiment with different blend modes to see which one works best for your lighting effect. Depending on your color choice, "Screen" or "Add" blend modes might yield good results.
**Step 9: Fine-Tune the Lighting**
- To enhance the realism, touch up the lighting effect around the candle's tip, where the brightest point should be.
**Step 10: Adjust Contrast**
- As a final touch, consider making the top 10% of the values 10% lighter and the bottom 10% of the values 10% darker to enhance the contrast and realism of your artwork.
By carefully applying these steps, you can create a realistic lighting effect that adds depth and dimension to your candle illustration. The Pixel Persona in Affinity Designer offers you the flexibility to fine-tune your artwork and achieve professional-looking results.
With this final step, you've now completed the candle project tutorial, learning essential techniques to create a stunning digital candle illustration. I hope you found this tutorial helpful, and I encourage you to explore further and apply these techniques to your own digital art projects.
